THE BEACHES

Ortano

It is one of the best known beaches in the Municipality of Rio Marina. The water is very clear and suitable for snorkeling. The beach, limited to the south by an islet, extends to the end of the homonymous valley which narrows in the final part between two promontories.

Exposed to the east winds, the beach is quite wide both in length (150 meters) and in width (45 meters), and is made up of sand and light brown gravel. The excursion to the islet of the same name is worth reaching partly by swimming, partly on foot, following the cliff and the tiny beaches that develop on the right of the bay.

THROUGH THE PATH OF LOVE THAT LEADS FROM THE BEACH OF ORTANO TO RIO MARINA,

WE MEET SOME DESCENTS AT SEA, BELOW WE DESCRIBE THE SMALL CAVES THAT CAN BE ACCESSED:

THE BEACHES

Porticciolo

The main beach is sunny and characterized by a mushroom-shaped rock on the north side. On the sides it is flanked by three shaded coves, reachable by swimming or through the rocks, two on the right side and one on the left side. The inlet where the beach is located is protected from the sirocco winds by the promontory that divides the Porticciolo from the Gulf of Ortano.

THE BEACHES

Luisi d’Angelo

Beautiful secluded cove, framed by a majestic holm oak forest with some pines here and there, ideal for those who love tranquility. Small pebble beach with crystal clear waters. The name derives from that of a local.

THE BEACHES

Marina di Gennaro

Geologically interesting stretch of coast, where this small beach opens up. Pebbly, exposed to the open sea (especially to the east winds), little frequented. Very nice environment for the rock formations, for the vine terraces and for a pine overlooking the cliff. Surely the toponym derives from a proper name, perhaps of a landowner in the area.

THE BEACHES

La Torre

This is Rio Marina beach, tiny but delightful, under the characteristic sixteenth-century octagonal tower. Of large and small gravel, the pier protects it from the north winds.

THE BEACHES

Topinetti

Topinetti beach is a very particular and unique coast that is located along the eastern side of the island of Elba on the road that leads from Rio Marina to Cavo. The shingle beach and bright black sand, color due to the huge amount of mineral present in the area, is about 200 meters long and offers splendid views of the islands of Cerboli and Plamaiola up to the Tuscan coast and Argentario. On the left side of the beach there are large rocks ranging from white to red through yellow. It is reached by a dirt road about one kilometer long.

THE BEACHES

Cala Seregola

With its red sand and the outline of buildings that testify to the mining activity of a thriving past, Cala Seregola turns out to be one of the most fascinating and particular beaches of the entire island. The coast is quite wide, it is not equipped with many services. (rental of umbrellas and deck chairs, bars and bathrooms) and, except in high season, it is not very crowded.

The beach is located about 3 kilometers from Rio Marina on the provincial road for Cavo.

THE BEACHES

Fornacelle

Also known as Cala del Telegrafo, the beach is located in an unspoiled bay just 2 km from Cavo and has a lush holm oak forest that reaches down to the sea. It is the beach of the island of Elba closest to the Piombinese coast faced by the islet of Palmaiola and its name recalls a past linked to the iron mines that surround the area. The beach, 150 meters long, of pebbles and mixed sand, partially iron, is characterized by a low and sandy bottom that is particularly suitable for families with children and by a clear water reciprocated by frequent breezes. The main peculiarity of this beach is the brilliance of the ferrous powder that is found in the sand and that creates particular glitters, especially on wet skin.

THE BEACHES

San Bennato Cavo

A strip of fine sand and gravel interrupted in the central part by a marina where the public hydrofoil and ferry service also docks, but this port structure has no effect on the quality of the water and the clarity of the seabed. In recent years, the promenade has been completely restored and a powerful nourishment of the central part of the beach has made the beach stable and very appreciated also by families with small children due to the slow decline of the seabed. Comfortable and fully equipped, it fits harmoniously into the picturesque town of Cavo.

THE BEACHES

Cavo

It is the ideal beach for those who want to spend a day at the beach in a pleasant way, in a relaxed and holiday atmosphere, also ideal for families with children thanks to the gently sloping seabed. The Spiaggia del Cavo is a long beach that stretches over the entire coast that overlooks the gulf. It is divided into two parts in the central area by the marina with the hydrofoil and ferry dock which in any case does not compromise the quality of the water and the clarity of the seabed always reciprocated by the currents of the Piombino canal. After the marina, there is a large stretch (approx. 400 meters) of white and fine gravel with some parts in sand, bordered by a beautiful promenade adorned with palm trees with belvedere furnished with sculptures and benches. Two breakwaters, created to avoid coastal erosion and built with flat rocks, extend into the sea and allow you to sunbathe, look out into the high water and admire the transparency of the sea. Numerous services are present both on the beach and along the promenade or the alleys of the town.

THE BEACHES

Frugoso

It is the northernmost beach on the island of Elba, at the end from the village of Cavo, also called Capo Castello from the name of the promontory that delimits it to the east. It is a medium-sized beach (approx. 500 meters) with a medium-fine gravel beach with light and dark shades in the part close to the access, while on the left it is formed by large stones up to the promontory of Capo Vita. The quality of the water is excellent and the possibility of hiking even with a mask and fins is interesting. Behind it there is a beautiful Mediterranean forest and the panorama stretches out towards the Canale di Piombino with the islet of Topi in the foreground, easily accessible by canoe or boat (450 meters away).
